As one of the official photographers for the 8th ASEAN Para Games held in Singapore last month, Wisnu Haryo Yudhanto did not only snap the raw emotions of triumphs and losses from the games with his Canon gear, he also felt privileged to witness first-hand and immortalise the inspiring human spirit of the extraordinary athletes in his photographs.
As this was not the first time I shoot a sport event, I got no other expectation to shoot other than to freeze the moment of actions and the triumph of victories of the athletes.
But somehow it turns out that this event gave me something more than the shooting excitement. To witness sporting event for disabled people was really something remarkable. It’s not just hardcore sports, It’s inspirational!
The Asean Para Games embodies the true spirit of the athletes, pushing beyond all boundaries. It opened my eyes to the true potential of disabled people. I was totally in awe of the athletes who obviously train just as hard and sacrifice just as much as the other normal sport athletes.
Although there’s a sad feeling to see a lot of empty seats compare to last Sea Games. I think people need to see this. That this is more than a sport games. It will make them realise that disabled people are extraordinary people. And after the event finished, I don’t think I will ever see sport in the same way again. I don’t think I will ever see disability in the same way again. And I am glad I captured those extraordinary moments with my Canon.
