Malaysia’s “Queen of Jazz”, Sheila Majid, returned to Singapore with a concert entitled “My Inspiration, My Love, My Legacy” at Esplanade Theatre, March 18, 2016.
Breaking out into the scene with her debut album Dimensi Baru in 1985, it was Sheila’s signature blend of jazz and R&B that propelled her into international music stardom. Her status as a legend was cemented by her daring interpretations of P. Ramlee’s classics from her 1990 album Legenda. Sheila recently released her new single Sinaran Cinta, as part of the soundtrack of a 2015 Malaysian film, Sinaran.
The show was visually grand, with three giant chandeliers hanging from the ceiling and the singer looking good in all her three costume changes, sparkling diamond accessories and all.
Her distinctive, velvety voice was near impeccable, gliding effortlessly between notes without having to resort to melismatic voice acrobatics.
I spent an unforgettable evening with Sheila as the official photographer and bask in the light of her exceptional voice. As one of Malaysia’s top singers, it would have been a surprise if the gig was anything less than musically flawless.
